Speight's Gold Medal Ale has been brewed at Speight's Brewery in Dunedin since James Speight, Charles Greenslade and William Dawson set up the brewery in 1876. The brewery is still on the same site but has expanded over the years, surviving fires, and even wars (the brewery cellar was setup as an air-raid shelter during the early 1940's).
In 1879, a cask of Speight's Strong Ale won the fledgling brewery it's first international award at the Sydney International exhibition. Sales soared and the future of Speight's was secured. Speight's Ale continued to go from strength to stength, winning major international awards including several gold medals, hence the name Speight's Gold Medal Ale which was changed in 1983.
Speight's Gold Medal Ale is full-flavoured, grassy and bitter. The bitterness and full malt flavour sets it apart from other draught beers.
Speight's Gold Medal Ale is a great accompaniment to any meat dish and is supurb with gamey Southern dishes such as venison, duck and rabbit.
Style: Draught Amber Ale
